Southern Festival

Today, V, L and I went to the Chester County BBQ Festival. V’s brother, C, was singing at the main stage so we went to hear him and watch how people in the South are living this year. We, of course, live in the South year round but do not often venture into the bastions of Southern tradition and pride. When we do, it is always a time of amazement and confusion. I love how in one festival you can have hard-core Baptists, Mennonites and Bikers-for-Christ in booths side by side hawking their wares and creeds.

Here are just a few of the many observations made today. Southern festivals: where there are more “muffin tops” per capita then any other mass gathering of people anywhere. Where camo overalls and Abercrombie and Fitch live side by side in perfect harmony. Where deep fried oreos and homemade wine pass as an acceptable snack. And where you can cheer for the most beautiful pig in a pageant just to devour it an hour later.

Oh, Southern festival, we love you and look forward to next year with great anticipation. Well, at the very least, dinner was inspired by healthy Southern cuisine.
